Where grilles differ from rolling steel
The curtain is an open lattice of aluminium or steel links and rods rather than solid slats. Individual links and rods are replaceable, which keeps most impact and wear damage in the low hundreds rather than a curtain replacement.
End locks — the small castings that keep the curtain aligned in its guides — shear and wear, and a grille that rattles or walks sideways in travel is usually end locks before anything else.
Counter shutters, the small solid doors over service counters and bars, are the same machine at kiosk scale. Their characteristic faults are spring fatigue from decades of twice-daily use and locks seized by exactly the environments bars and food counters provide.
The faults that actually come up
Spring tension loss. A grille that has become heavy to lift, or drifts down from open, has lost barrel spring tension — same physics as any rolling door, and re-tensioning or spring replacement is the fix.
Lock and slide-bolt failures. Storefront grilles get locked and unlocked every single day, often by different hands, and cylinder and bolt wear is routine. This is also the after-hours emergency call: a grille that will not unlock is a shop that cannot open.
Motor and limit faults on operated grilles, which follow the commercial operator pattern — limits drift, contactors wear — and are diagnosed the same way.

A grille across an exit path in an occupied building is a life-safety component: it must be open during business hours and may be subject to egress requirements the same way an exit door is.
