Brands

Garage door brands, and what actually differs

For most repairs the brand does not matter — springs, cables, rollers and tracks are standard parts across nearly every door. Brand matters in three places: replacement door sections, opener electronics, and remote compatibility.

Which brands share parts

Several familiar brand names come out of the same factory. Knowing which saves money when a part appears to be discontinued under one name and is stocked under another.

Chamberlain Group

LiftMaster · Chamberlain · most Craftsman

One manufacturer, three names. Gears, sprockets, capacitors and many logic boards cross over. Remotes cross over within the same learn-button generation.

Overhead Door Corporation

Overhead Door · Genie

Shared parent. Opener parts and remotes frequently interchange between the two lines.

Everything else

Marantec · Sommer · Hörmann · Ryobi

Own protocols and own hardware. Remotes do not cross to the groups above, and on Hörmann neither does the door hardware.

Before you call anyone, identify the unit

Two photographs answer most of what a technician or a parts counter needs to know. The first is the model and serial label, normally on the side or rear of the motor housing.

The second is the programming button under the light cover. Its colour identifies the radio generation, which is what actually determines remote compatibility — and it is more reliable than the model number, because the same model was often produced across more than one generation.

For a door rather than an opener, the label is usually inside on the end of a section or on the top panel, and it is what determines whether a matching replacement section still exists.

Common questions

Does the brand of my garage door change what a repair costs?

For springs, cables, rollers and tracks, no — those are standard parts and cost the same across almost every brand. Brand matters when a door section needs replacing, or when an opener needs a board or a proprietary component, because that is where availability and lead time differ.

Which garage door opener brands share parts?

LiftMaster, Chamberlain and most Craftsman openers are all made by Chamberlain Group and share many parts. Overhead Door and Genie share a parent company and their opener parts often interchange. Marantec, Sommer, Hörmann and Ryobi each use their own systems and do not cross over.

How do I find out what brand my garage door opener is?

The brand is usually printed on the motor housing or on the back panel. If it has worn off, the model and serial label is normally on the side or rear of the housing. Photograph both that label and the colour of the programming button under the light cover — together they identify the unit and its radio generation.

Do I need a brand-specific technician?

Rarely. Most repairs are mechanical and use standard parts. The exceptions worth asking about in advance are Wayne Dalton's TorqueMaster system, which is diagnosed differently from a conventional spring, and Hörmann, whose European hardware does not interchange with US parts.
