What the annual test involves
A fire-rated rolling door is held open by a fusible link or an electro-magnetic release tied to the alarm system. In a fire the release drops the door to seal the opening.
NFPA 80 requires that mechanism to be drop-tested annually. The door is released, observed closing fully and unaided, then reset. Both the test and the result must be documented — the documentation is what an inspector or insurer asks for.
Why doors fail the test
Accumulated debris in the guides, which stops the curtain travelling fully. The most common cause and the cheapest to fix.
Governor wear. The governor controls descent speed; when worn the door drops too fast or stalls.
Painted-over or damaged fusible links, which will not release at the rated temperature.
Obstructions stored in the door path, which is a housekeeping failure rather than a mechanical one, but fails the test all the same.
