Speed comes from what is missing: no slats, no stiffness, a soft bottom edge that forgives contact. The trade is sealing, not safety.
Different door, different failure modes
There is no counterbalance spring on a high-speed door. A motor drives the fabric curtain directly, which removes the single most common commercial failure and replaces it with different ones.
Fabric curtain tears, usually from impact or from an edge fraying where it enters the side guides. Panels of the curtain are replaceable on most models.
Drive and gearbox wear, which is the consequence of very high cycle counts. A door running 100 cycles a day is doing 36,500 a year.
Controls and safety sensors. High-speed doors carry light curtains and induction loops rather than simple photo-eyes, and a fault there stops the door long before anything mechanical does.
Self-repairing doors, and what that actually means
Many modern high-speed doors release the curtain from its guides on impact rather than tearing, then re-seat it on the next cycle. That is genuinely useful in a forklift aisle and it is the main reason to specify one.
It is not unlimited. Repeated impacts still fatigue the curtain and stretch the guide seals, and the re-seat mechanism itself wears. A door that has been hit weekly for a year needs inspecting even if it still closes.
