Screw drive is the real difference
A screw-drive opener turns a threaded steel rod, and the carriage rides along it. There is no chain to stretch and no belt to wear, which is the advantage.
The trade-off is that the rod must stay greased with the right lubricant. A dry rod grinds, runs slowly, and eventually chews out the carriage — the single most common cause of a Genie failing early.

Intellicode and programming
Genie's rolling-code system is called Intellicode. Like other rolling-code systems it changes the code after every use, so a remote that has drifted out of sync needs re-learning rather than replacing.
