Garage door contractor licensing, and how to check it

State contractor board. The state licenses the trade directly and maintains a searchable register. California is the clearest example: the Contractors State License Board issues a D-28 classification covering doors, gates and activated devices, and licensing is required above a low dollar threshold.

Municipal only. The state sets no requirement and cities register contractors individually, so a company can be entirely legitimate in one city and unregistered in the next.

No specific requirement. Some states regulate general contracting but not this trade specifically, which means the meaningful checks become insurance and bonding rather than a licence number.

The licence number itself, checked on the issuing board's register rather than taken from the company's own website. A number printed on a van is not verification.

General liability insurance, and that it is current. Garage door work happens on your property with a component under significant stored energy — this is the one that matters if something goes wrong.

Workers' compensation, if anyone other than the owner will be on site. Without it, an injury on your property can become your exposure.

A bond, where the state requires one. It is what a homeowner claims against if work is taken and not completed.

The barriers are low: the tooling is inexpensive, the work is mobile, and demand is urgent and non-comparison-shopped. Someone with a broken spring at 7am is not calling three companies.

The standard pattern is a low advertised price that changes on arrival, combined with an undersized spring that fails inside two or three years. Both are cheaper to supply than the correct job.

The defence is boring and effective: ask for the licence number before booking, check it on the register, and ask for the cost band for the specific repair. A legitimate company answers all three without friction.

Garage door repair is one of only two US service categories — the other is locksmithing — that Google places under Advanced Verification for Local Services Ads.

That exists precisely because these two categories attracted enough fraudulent lead generation to warrant it. A provider that has passed Advanced Verification has had its licence and background checked by a third party.

It is not a substitute for checking the register yourself, but it is a meaningful filter, and it is the reason a legitimate operator in this trade is usually happy to be asked.
