How much does garage door opener repair cost?
Garage door opener repair costs $150 to $400 depending on what failed. A stripped drive gear — the most common opener fault — is only $15 to $40 in parts. A logic board is $80 to $180. Which one you have determines whether repair or replacement is the better spend.
- Typical cost, fitted
- $150–400
- Can you do it yourself?
- Partly — depends on the fault

- Labor, and everything else
- $0–385

What moves the price
- Which part failed
- Gear kit at the bottom of the range, logic board at the top. The diagnosis is most of the price difference.
- Brand and age
- Parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie are widely stocked. Discontinued lines can make a cheap repair impossible.
- Capacitor
- A motor that hums but will not start is often a $20 capacitor — one of the cheapest real repairs there is.
- It might not be the opener
- Misaligned safety sensors and broken springs both present as 'the opener stopped working' and are different jobs entirely.
The tell for a bad quote
A quote to replace the whole opener without anyone having opened the light cover to look at the gear. The gear is designed to be the sacrificial part; a technician who skips straight to replacement has not diagnosed anything.
Check it is actually the opener first
Two faults masquerade as opener failure and account for a large share of call-outs. Ruling them out costs nothing.
First, the safety sensors. If the door opens but will not stay closed, or reverses immediately, look at the two small units near the floor at each side. Both should show a steady light. A knocked bracket or a cobweb across the lens will stop the door closing, and realigning them is free.
Second, the springs. Pull the emergency release cord and lift the door by hand. If it is very heavy or will not stay at waist height, a spring has broken and the opener is fine — it was simply never designed to lift a door without a counterbalance. Fitting a new opener to a door with a broken spring will destroy the new opener too.
Repair or replace
Under about eight years old with a gear or capacitor fault: repair. You are spending $150 to $250 on a unit with most of its life left.
Over about fifteen years with a board fault: replace. You are spending $200 to $400 on a unit whose next failure is not far behind, and a new opener at $350 to $800 brings a warranty, quieter operation and current safety features.
The absolute cut-off is 1993. Federal law has required photo-eye safety reversal since then; an opener older than that has no automatic reversal at all, and no repair makes it safe. Replace it regardless of what is wrong with it.
Doing it yourself — the honest answer
A drive gear kit is genuinely within reach for a confident DIYer: no spring tension is involved, the parts are cheap, and the work is overhead but not dangerous. A logic board swap is also mechanically simple. What is not DIY is diagnosing which one you need — and buying the wrong part twice costs more than the call-out.
Common questions
How much does garage door opener repair cost?
Garage door opener repair costs $150 to $400. A drive gear kit is $150 to $250 installed, a logic board $200 to $400, and a start capacitor is often under $180. Sensor misalignment, which is frequently the real problem, is usually resolved at no charge.
Is it better to repair or replace a garage door opener?
Repair a unit under about eight years old with a gear or capacitor fault. Replace one over fifteen with a board fault, since a new opener at $350 to $800 brings a warranty and current safety features. Any opener made before 1993 should be replaced regardless — it predates the federal photo-eye reversal requirement.
My opener runs but the door does not move. What is that?
Usually a stripped drive gear. The plastic gear is designed as the sacrificial part so the motor survives, and it fails exactly this way — full-speed motor, no movement. It is $150 to $250 to replace and the parts are only $15 to $40.
