Check this first — it may cost you nothing
Try the wall button. If that works, replace the remote battery. Also check the wall panel for a lock or vacation button — it is the single most common cause and it costs nothing to fix.
Why this happens
If the wall button works but the remote does not, it is the remote — battery or programming. If neither works, check that the opener still has power and that the lock button on the wall panel has not been pressed, which disables remotes entirely.
The plastic drive gear is the part that usually goes. It is deliberately the weakest link — it strips so the motor survives. That is why the opener runs at full speed with nothing moving.
Less likely, but possible
- Lost programming after a power surge, which needs re-pairing but no parts
- A failed receiver board in the opener, which is the only expensive outcome
- Interference from an LED bulb in the opener housing, which is more common than people expect
