Why this happens
A burning smell from an opener is electrical. Either the motor is straining against a door it cannot move, or a component on the logic board is failing. Both are reasons to cut power rather than keep trying.
An electrical burning smell means stop using the opener now — a cooking board or motor winding does not improve with further cycles.
